87 days and counting
87 days and counting was a site-specific interactive installation piece done in collaboration with Nic Ames and was hosted by Basecamp Studios in Seattle in conjunction with the "Martyrs" Group that ran from January 6th-31st 2024. The base "dots" where done with Acrylic. While the ink, was used for the stamps. The wall space used was roughly 9 feet by 6 feet. The wall card had a QR code for additional information such as the artist statement and instruction on how to interact with this piece.
87 days and counting original artist statement:
The goal of this piece is to abstractly visualize and humanize the current ongoing genocide of Palestinians through direct audience participation. Each of the dots on this wall represents a human being killed since October 7, 2023, as a result of Israel's illegal occupation, blue for Israeli settlers and ochre tones for the Palestinians under the Israeli occupation in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The exact death toll is difficult to pinpoint due to several factors: the Israeli Occupation Forces have besieged and relentlessly bombed all occupied territories, there is limited cell and internet service, infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed and journalists, hospitals and medical personnel have been heavily targeted. As of January 1, 2024, Al Jazeera and the Gaza Ministry of Health estimate the total number of Palestinians killed as a direct result of this genocide is conservatively around 22,000 (Israeli deaths are estimated to be 1,139). This death toll is represented by the mosaic on this wall and does not include the number of Palestinian lives lost and displaced since the beginning of the land theft and ethnic cleansing in the 1948 Nakba.
While the dots on the wall are a static representation of what has happened since October 7, 2023, the stamps are provided for audience participation to represent and honor the memory of those Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli settlers since the initial installation. An average of 300 Palestinians are killed by occupation forces every 24 hours, and without medical care, clean water and sanitation, adequate food and nutrition, the World Health Organization suggests that whomever is not killed directly by violence will succumb to disease. I am asking you, the audience, to illustrate the continued genocide on the wall with these stamps. While you are stamping this wall of death, please think about what this image represents; human beings who have been violently murdered by Israeli Occupation Forces funded and supported by your American tax dollars.
If the gravity of seeing the number of lives taken from this atrocity makes you uncomfortable, there are actions you can take today, some of which are provided in the Linktree. You have the power to stop the genocide. There is room for everyone in activism: the people who march, people who make signs and people who lend bail money to activists who are arrested. Spend time educating those in your sphere of influence of what is happening in occupied Palestine. Contact your elected representatives and insist that they call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire. Gazans have been shut off from the world by the Israeli occupation who turned off their power and internet; consider donating e-Sims for Gazans to document the crimes being committed against them and stay connected with the world at large. Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions have a proven record of achieving tangible and meaningful change; consider targeted boycotts of companies complicit in Israeli’s illegal occupation and war crimes and hold corporations accountable. Follow, like and share Palestinian voices on social media to keep their stories active and inform the world of the truth that mainstream media is withholding. Additionally, consider donating to any of the charities listed in our link tree if you have financial means.
